Membership FAQs

Q

Which days does the club race?

We race on Tuesday evenings and Saturday afternoons.

Q

Can I hire a boat?

There is no hire of boats. Members may borrow a club boat at the discretion of the duty Sailing Committee member when there is a safety boat on the water during, for example, racing or a training session. The Sailing Committee member will take into account the prevailing weather conditions and the skills and experience of the potential borrower.

Q

Will I have to help with sailing duties?

All sailing members are required to assist with the club racing either by completing duties or paying an 'opt out' fee.  Duties are allocated on a rota basis.  The type of duty allocated to each member will take into account the information provided by members on their Sailing Duty Questionnaire.

Q

Do I have to race?

No. However if you do go out while a race is in progress, you should keep clear of all boats which are participating.

Q

How is club racing organised?

Boats are split into fleets, based on their Portsmouth Yardstick (PY) rating. The fleets are RS400 and 2000 (our supported classes), Fast, Medium, and Novice. Short course racing (generally early and late in the season) consists of all-in starts and handicap racing.

Q

Can I use the facilities when there is no club racing?

Yes, members may use the changing rooms and keys are available to purchase at the bar. However safety on the water is your sole responsibility.

Q

When is safety cover available?

During all club races and Saturday training, at least one patrol boat equipped with a VHF radio will be on the water. Safety cover is also available when there are official activities on other days. Check the club calendar for the official activities.

Q

Can I bring a friend to the Club?

Yes, you may bring friends to the Club either socially or for sailing, however if this exceeds six visits by any one friend then membership is required. All visitors to the clubhouse must be signed into the visitors book each time they visit.

Q

Can I join Lee On the Solent Sailing Club on a temporary basis?

Yes. The costs for temproary sailing membership are £50 per week (including boat storage if space allows) or £15 per day (maximum 6 days in a year). The cost of temporary social membership is £10 per week for a maximum of 4 weeks. Other arrangements might be possible. Discuss your circumstances with the membership secretary.

Q

Can I sail at Lee without becoming a member?

Yes, you may sail at LOSSC on six occasions during one year before you are required to become a member. As boat storage space is limited boats must be taken away on each visit.

Q

Do I need a boat?

No, crewing jobs are normally on offer plus the Club has a number of boats that members may borrow (at the discretion of the duty Sailing Committee member).

Q

Is there a joining fee?

Yes, see Membership Fees for more information.

Q

Is there a waiting list?

No, not at the moment as the Club is expanding.
